Rule 240 and Other Travel Myths

Although we can't tell for certain whether the Loch Ness monster lurks in the waters of Scotland, there are some myths about which our team of travel experts is suitably enlightened. A number of prevalent tall tales, which relate to everything from transportation expenses to health to hotels, have confused thousands of travelers as the stories circulate on blogs and boards like stale cabin air. Want the truth? We've created a list of common travel yarns and broken down which "facts" are really fiction.

If your flight is delayed, mention rule 240 and the airline will compensate you.
It's one of the greatest travel myths: mention rule 240 and you will get immediate compensation if your flight is delayed or canceled. Rule 240 was created years ago by Civil Aeronautics Board as a way to protect passengers. Although the rule did state that ticketholders would get placed on the next available plane if their flights were delayed or canceled, it is no longer in existence. Today, airlines are deregulated, which means that there is no law that says all airlines must compensate inconvenienced passengers.

However, citing rule 240 at the airline counter when your scheduled flight is canceled or delayedmay help you. Why? Some airlines still have a "rule 240" in their contracts that offers a form of passenger protection in case of cancellations or delays.

The Bottom Line: A government-issued rule 240 that applies to all airlines does not exist, but your airline may have its own rule 240 (or a similar condition with a different name). Read your airline's conditions of carriage to see whether or not you will receive compensation if your flight arrives late or is canceled.

Airport Security Q&A

Weekend stays are more expensive than weekday stays.
Most travelers are working stiffs with jobs during the week, which makes weekend travel precious and pricy, thanks to a universal surge of travelers on Saturdays and Sundays. But, contrary to popular belief, weekend lodging is not always more expensive than a weekday stay. Although B&B'sand hotels that see a lot of leisure travelers may have higher weekend rates, hotels that cater largely to business travelers often offer good weekend discounts, as business travel guests proliferate during the week making weekends less busy.

The proof is in the pudding: on a recent search we found weekend specials for Best Western, Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton that were actually cheaper than full-price weekday stays. Google "weekend hotel deals" or check out our hotel deals page to plan a budget hotel stay over the weekend.

The Bottom Line: Book your weekend stay at a business hotel and you may find a rate that is cheaper than weekday prices.

Train travel is cheaper than air travel.
It's a common myth that flights are more expensive than train tickets. But the truth is that air travel quite frequently trumps train travel as the cheapest way to get around. Discount airlines, both domestic and international, like Southwest Airlines, JetBlue, Ryanair and easyJet, offer flights that can be significantly less expensive than the price of train travel for the same itinerary.

For example, we found a one-way flight from Newark to Fort Lauderdale for $104 plus taxes and fees on JetBlue. The same trip on Amtrak came to $132 each way. In Europe, discount airlines often offer rock-bottom sales on flights -- for travel between two major European cities, you may pay as little as 9.99 GBP (about $15.52) plus taxes and fees each way. That price beats typical rail ticket fees, which run roughly $50 to $200 each way, depending on where you're traveling. But keep in mind that pricing transportation is tricky. If you're going to be doing a lot of traveling within foreign country, a rail pass will probably be cheaper than purchasing a series of flights. Also, rail passes tend to give travelers more flexibility than traveling by air, as you can just show up at the station when you want to travel, as opposed to booking a set date with a flight. And we can't forget aboutbaggage fees, which can really run up if you're trying to lug too much luggage on your flight. The Bottom Line: It all depends on your itinerary -- but it isn't unusual for a flight to be cheaper than a train ticket, especially when you're booking with a domestic or international discount airline. Always check airline pricing and compare it to the price of train travel for your specific itinerary before you book.

Discount Airfare Deals

Cruises will make you fat.
Many active travelers think of cruises as floating fat machines. They assume that cruising involves huge buffets and hours of sedentary activity on beaches and lounge chairs. While this may be true on some ships, a recent trend in the industry has brought healthy eating and exercise to the forefront of the cruising lifestyle.

Slimming innovations in the cruise world include low-calorie menu options, sushi bars, upgraded gyms and ultra-active excursions. Celebrity Cruises has free-standing Spa Cafes that dish up delicious low-cal treats like crunchy raw veggies and sushi. Disney Cruise Line offers outdoor dance parties to get the whole family up and moving. And Costa Cruises has special spa cabins that include unlimited access to gym and spa facilities (at a price, of course). Plus, smaller cruise lines like French Country Waterways have continuously ducked the all-you-can-eat-buffet bandwagon and offered regional cuisine and unique active excursions. In fact, French Country Waterways has no Internet access or TV's onboard, and the line provides passengers with bicycles to use on land.

The Bottom Line: The cruise industry has moved toward health and wellness in recent years. Cruising won't make you fat -- that is, unless you choose to actually eat all you can eat at the buffet.

Bottled water is always safe.
Bottled water is not always safe, whether you're at home or abroad. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, at least 25 percent of bottled water is just tap water. This means that if you're in a location where the tap water disagrees with your system, certain bottled waters may affect your health as well.

So how do you quench your thirst? Your bottle of water may list its source on the label. If your water is provided by a hotel or restaurant, ask the concierge or waitstaff if the bottled water is filtered water or spring water. The former -- filtered water -- is just a fancy name for tap water that may or may not have been run through some kind of a filtration system. If you want to be extra careful, buy a portable water filter from a reputable travel supply store and run all of your drinking water through it -- regardless of whether it's from a bottle or not.

The Bottom Line: Not all bottled drinking water is safe. Take precautions such as learning about the source of your bottled water or using a portable water filter. Read Drinking Water Safety for more information on obtaining clean water overseas.

You can't carry on scissors, lighters or nail clippers.
This one isn't so much a myth as just one more confusing rule in the labyrinthine list of ever-changing TSA regulations. We get dozens of e-mails from readers who want to know whether or not they can pack their nail clippers, or if they have to pay a hefty checked bag fee just to keep their fingernails trimmed on vacation. The TSA has confiscated carry-on scissors, lighters or nail clippers in the past -- but the rules have since changed.

The Transportation Security Administration has a complete list of what you can and can't bring on a plane on its Web site at tsa.gov. Nail clippers and most common lighters are presently allowed in carry-on luggage, as are scissors with blades shorter than four inches.

Note that airport security rules do vary by country, so if you're flying internationally you may want to call your airline and ask whether any differing rules will apply at the foreign airports on your itinerary.

The Bottom Line: Yes, most nail clippers, scissors and lighters can be carried on a plane.

What's Wrong with This Carry-On?

Recirculated cabin air on planes will make you sick.
Some planes recirculate cabin air through a ventilation system instead of pumping in fresh air (the former is cheaper than the latter), and many travelers fear that recirculated air will make them sick. However, a study conducted by the University of California, which involved over 1,000 passengers, revealed that recirculated cabin air does not increase passengers' risk of catching colds.

However, the study also showed that air travelers do catch more colds than the average person -- 19 percent of passengers who flew on the planes with recirculated air caught colds and 21 percent of passengers on planes that use fresh air got sick, compared with 3 percent of non-travelers. Dry air and a proliferation of germs in a small space are probably what cause passengers to get sick, so using a hand sanitizer, taking vitamins and drinking plenty of fluids while onboard is a good idea.

Though women still need to take the necessary precautions and be aware of cultural norms when traveling abroad, there are great perks to hitting the road alone. Traveling solo offers approachability, enabling one to meet more people than if she were traveling with a group, and giving her a unique window into the lives of the host culture.

Below are tips to make the solo travel experience a safer and more satisfying one.

Before You Go
Before you hop on a plane and head to your destination, learn about the geographical and historical lie of the land, read up on the country's artistic and cultural events and practice some key local phrases to make your trip richer. Don't forget to research some of the cultural norms and prevailing belief systems, specifically those that pertain to women.

When packing your bags, remember that less is best. Traveling with minimal gear not only increases your economy of movement, but also decreases your chances of becoming a target for thieves or pickpockets.

It has never been easier to find expert advice on travel, particularly by travelers in the know. A great way to find out more about your destination is to get the inside scoop from other women travelers who have been there. When You Arrive
It is wise to check in with the consulate once you arrive at your destination. As a safety precaution, you may need to be contacted by your country's consulate in the event of an emergency, or if your family has to be notified of your whereabouts.

As a woman traveling alone, insurance may come in the form of a cell phone. Though you should rely far more on your intuition than a cell phone in the event of a dicey situation, knowing that you can call ahead to secure a hotel room or contact a friend can be extremely helpful. If you plan on being in a country for some time, having an unlocked GSM cell phone with a local, prepaid SIM card is a great option.

If you plan on getting cash or staying in remote areas for extended periods of time, a money belt is indispensable. Remember that timing is everything: as a single woman traveler, going to an ATM in the middle of the night can be unsafe. Ensure that you have enough cash not only to get from point A to point B, but enough to last for as long as you plan to stay.

If you are going to be walking around a city or town, write down the name of your hotel and note landmarks. When taking a taxi, always try to get the taxi number or license plate before you head off in case you encounter any trouble along the way. Agreeing on the fare beforehand and having the exact change will prevent you from getting overcharged. Avoid traveling alone at night in a taxi unless absolutely necessary.

Traveling solo can be a liberating experience, and keeping your friends and relatives abreast of your travels is a great way to assuage any bouts of loneliness. Blogging about your experiences is a great way to share your trip with those that cannot join you.

Staying Safe
If you're traveling alone, choosing a busy hotel in a central part of town is a great option. Not only will it make you less conspicuous, you'll have the opportunity to meet other travelers passing through.

1. The right luggage
The best way to start packing is with great luggage. Look for luggage that has numerous compartments for easy storage. Most beauty companies offer compact or travel-sized options of their best sellers, so stock up and pack a nice light makeup bag. Look for mini lip glosses, lipsticks, moisturizers and even mascaras. And to stay smelling fresh and sophisticated, pop a solid fragrance in your bag (ideal for your purse once you hit your destination) such as Gwen Stefani's L, a L.A.M.B fragrance which is also sold in a solid. 4. Feet first
The biggest conundrum for a stylish jetsetter? How many shoes can you fit in your suitcase and which ones from your vast collection should you take? Decisions, decisions. Stick to three shoe styles and you will be all set, no matter what the occasion. "Take one pair of flats, one pair of black pumps or heels, and one other pair that you may need such as sexy winter boots, or strappy sandals," suggests Gatto. You can easily dress up or dress down any outfit with these shoes. Also stay with neutral colors, like black and brown, just to make sure you don't clash and you won't be spending hours trying to decide if you should pack your patent forest green flats or your silver ones.

5. Nix the blow dryer
Face it. Blow dryers are clunky and take up way too much room, no matter how you to squeeze them into your luggage. So leave it at home and call ahead to your hotel and make sure one is in your room, or plan on going natural with your hair for the trip. Sticking in a slim flat iron or compact curling iron will give you many hair options without taking up tons of space. Plus, if you are traveling overseas, you don't need to worry about the pesky converter for the plug.

6. Packing the jewels
If you're planning on taking some of your jewelry, be sure to pack it separately in a soft satin or silk jewelry bag. A soft bag will fit more easily into your suitcase than a box and the satin and silk will keep your jewels from getting scratched, nicked or scuffed. But, keep your most valuable and precious possessions at home. You don't want to risk loosing them or forgetting them at the hotel!

7. Tiny must-havesThere are just some things a gal should not be without while traveling. Mini wet naps are one of them. "They give you a fresh boost when plane hopping," says Gatto. Plus they rid your skin of those horrible airport smells and give dry skin much needed moisture, which is especially good for long flights. Don't forget to pack your mini toothbrush and toothpaste along with your mini shampoos and conditioners (hotel hair products just won't do you justice), pint-sized hand creams and a mini manicure kit to keep your nails looking smooth and lady-like. The Costa Concordia’s accident off the Italian coast is a horrible tragedy, with at least 11 people dead and others still missing.

But the industry’s record for safety remains strong: Nearly 14 million people cruise each year on major cruise ships, and few industry watchers can even remember the last time a fire or ship failure resulted in passenger deaths.

The U.S. Coast Guard is involved with safety aspects of the cruise ship design before it is even built. Once launched, each cruise ship that sails from the U.S. must pass U.S. Coast Guard certification. Each is inspected at least every six months on both announced and unannounced inspections that include reviewing staff safety procedures. Crews are drilled regularly on safety procedures. Queen's bath in Kauai, Hawaii

I must say the Queen's Bath is a must see when you go to Kauai! Only during the summer though. The "pool" is carved into a lava shelf and is the size of several large swimming pools. Views of the ocean and the rocky shoreline here are fantastic. Even when the surf is fairly calm, waves crash on the rocks shooting spray high into the air. Small fish and tiny sealife also call Queen's Bath home.

Take Highway 56 to Princeville. Turn right on Ka Haku Road. Turn right on Punahele and right again on Kapiolani. Park along the road at the end of Kapiolani and follow the dirt trail along the stream for about 25 yards. At the end of the trail turn left for about 300 yards to the Bath.

The Great Blue Hole in Belize

In doing research this week for a travel request, I got excited about visiting a destination new to me, BELIZE. More and more people are asking us about this little gem, south of the border. Belize, formerly known as the British Honduras, is in northern Central America. English is the official language, but Spanish is widely spoken as the major ethnic group of Belize is now Latino. The weather in Belize has two seasons, a rainy one and a dry one. Rainy season is generally June to November. The coldest month of the year is January, while May is the warmest.

Belize is home to the largest Barrier Reef in the Western Hemisphere, and is well known as a supreme diving destination. Belize also has terrific snorkeling, sport and salt water fishing, hiking and biking, tubing, and Mayan ruins. The country is home to more than 200 islands - many are secluded and less traveled.

Placencia, Belize

Placencia is a beautiful emerald peninsula in southern Belize with 16 miles of sandy beaches. The Caribbean Sea is to the east, and the lagoon lies to the west looking to the mainland of Belize. Placencia is known for the warm and caring people. Trips to the Reef, which is 17 miles away, can easily be arranged for snorkeling or diving. There are several wonderful resorts on the island. We had an amazing time on our trip! If it weren’t for missing our kids, we’d probably still be there. The best decision of our entire trip was choosing to use Tracee Williams with Destinations. We recently had a honeymoon couple return from Costa Rica and they shared some gorgeous pictures with us. They flew into San Jose and rented a car (make sure it's a 4 wheel drive vehicle) to travel to the Arenal and Monteverde regions. The Arenal Volcano is one of the 10 most active volcanoes in the world. Monteverde is home to cloud forests which are rare and occur within tropical or subtropical mountainous environments where the atmospheric conditions are just right for a consistent cover of clouds.

Big Island, Big Memories

The Kilgore Family spent their Spring Break on Oahu and The Big Island in Hawaii. They spent time in Honolulu visiting Pearl Harbor. On the Big Island they were very adventurous and took in the sheer beauty and scenery. They made memories that will last a lifetime, and their pictures say a thousand words.

The highlights include:

Seeing the Arizona memorial and the USS Missouri. We got to see the actual papers (instruments of surrender) that the Japanese had to sign to surrender. One of the tour guides gave some interesting details about the signing of those documents. When Japan's copy was signed the Canadian Colonel signed in the wrong spot and they had to do pen and ink changes on the spot to fix them. I was able to take pictures of the documents as well.
We watched portions of the filming for "Hawaii Five-O" on the beach right outside our hotel as we ate breakfast.
The kids got to see and swim with sea turtles at sea turtle beach. They actually swim right up by you without hesitation.

A Dying Mema's Wish

I recently had the privilege to plan a very special family vacation. When Marla contacted me initially, I had no idea how closely we would work together and how near and dear her family's special vacation would be to my heart. Mema took the whole family to The Reef Atlantis March 5-12 for an unforgettable family vacation as she is drawing near the end of her life. I have great admiration for Mema. Read Marla's touching testimonial below.

Family always came first with my mother-in-law. She set the tradition of a family vacation so all her grandchildren could be together for at least one week out of the year. When this amazing woman was diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer, she fought with all her might until her doctors said any further treatment would be of no help. It came as no real surprise when we asked her if there was anything she wanted to do; she said she wanted to take a trip. Not just any trip, she wanted to take her whole family, all 15 of us, plus her caregiver to The Reef Atlantis in the Bahamas.

A friend of mine recommended Destinations. I can never express how grateful I am for all the work Sarah did to help us take this journey. She organized 11 expedited passports, travel for 4 families including 8 children and our severely mobility impaired Mema, lodging, meal plans and very good travel insurance-- all within three weeks of my initial contact to the office. Over the weekend my husband and I flew out west for a ski getaway at Heavenly. We flew into the Reno/Tahoe Airport and rented a car to drive to South Lake Tahoe. The drive took us just under an hour and was picturesque. Gorgeous pines capped with snow and mountains in the backdrop. Upon arrival at the hotel, we valeted the car (and never saw it again until we checked out). We spent 3 nights at the Marriott Grand Residence in South Lake Tahoe. We had a comfortable studio with a full kitchen. It was perfect for our needs, and best of all the resort was convenient to Heavenly Sports (ski rentals) and the gondola (15 minute ride up to the base of Heavenly). The ski shop was literally underneath our room, and the gondola was just steps away from there. We valeted our skis (complimentary) each afternoon when we came down the mountain. The last day when we turned our skis and boots in, we walked in our socks to our room because it was that close (and we may have forgotten our shoes, oops). There are plenty of things to see and do within walking distance of the Marriott Grand Residence in South Lake Tahoe: movie theater, restaurants, ice skating rink, grocery store, The North Face shop, ice cream, Starbucks, casinos, other shopping and much more.

Heavenly is home to 29 lifts and 95 runs. You can ski in Nevada and California. While California has the prettiest scenery with Lake Tahoe at the bottom, we preferred the blue runs on the Nevada side of the mountain best. Galaxy, Perimeter and The Pines are a few of our favorites.

On the first day I made one mistake. I followed my husband’s lead as he took an “off run” turn and we ended up on a black diamond full of moguls. He was up above me and managed to cut back over to the blue, but I was downhill with no hope of returning to the safe, secure blue so I just had to go with it. I made an embarrassing attempt at getting down the run. I ended up with my skis crossed at one point, and the next thing I knew there was a pack of kids skiing like pros through the moguls. To make matters even worse, the run was underneath a ski lift. At least no one knew me. I made my way to the bottom with little grace and no style, and Bill was waiting for me there. How nice.

No trip out west is complete without a stop at In-N-Out Burger, so we got our fix on the way to the airport. Bill had his burger animal style (are you familiar with the secret menu? Animal style translated means a mustard-cooked beef patty with additional pickles, cheese, spread and grilled onions diced up and mixed together on the grill before getting dumped on your burger.) and I preferred the traditional cheeseburger, no onion please. Their fries are the best.

We would return to South Lake Tahoe and Heavenly in a heartbeat.

The McAhren's Visit Disney World

Camron and Lee McAhren, and their son Garrett Pieroni, just returned home from a fabulous fun filled week at Disney World. Lee was kind enough to share her thoughts on their vacation. Thank You Camron, Lee, and Garrett for the fun trip report, and for your business!

What a WONDERFUL Christmas family vacation! All of the parks at Disney World are decorated so beautifully that it will literally take your breath away! We stayed at Coronado Springs and enjoyed the fantastic Disney Dining plan promotion, which I HIGHLY recommend. We visited Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot. All four had something unique and exciting to offer, which made our entire vacation unforgettable. We attended Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party the first day we arrived, and it started our vacation out on the right foot :-) It was literally a magical experience! This vacation was one of the best family vacations we have taken, and I would love to visit again during Christmas time. Thanks to Tracee and Destinations for all of the planning and details; it was definitely a memorable six days!

Allure of the Seas: A Sneak Peek

Last weekend Tracee and I had the privilege to sail on a Pre-Inaugural Cruise to Nowhere on Royal Caribbean’s newest ship, Allure of the Seas. {You may be asking, what’s a cruise to nowhere? Well, it’s a 2 day quick sail out to sea and back, stopping nowhere.} She is brand new and let me tell you, she is the definition of fabulous. She will take her first passenger sailing in December, but we got a sneak peek at all she has to offer.

With endorsements from Oprah, The Today Show with Hoda and Kathie Lee, as well as the filming of Jack and Jill, Allure of the Seas is all the talk. Allure of the Seas made Oprah’s Ultimate Favorite Things 2010 list. On her show Friday, Oprah named Allure of the Seas as her favorite cruise and gave everyone in the audience a free cruise. Friday morning, The Today Show with Hoda and Kathie Lee was filmed live onboard Allure of the Seas. Tracee was lucky enough to get a photo with Hoda. Tracee reported that Hoda was a lovely and gracious woman. The film, Jack and Jill is currently being filmed on the Allure as well. Katie Holmes and Adam Sandler co-star in this holiday movie that will hit theaters next Fall. Suri was onboard with her mom, and we spotted them on the Boardwalk one afternoon.

So just what does the Allure of the Seas have to offer? Everything! It is the largest cruise ship in the world offering you the most at sea. During our 48 hour whirlwind experience on Allure of the Seas we were wowed by everything. Our Superior Ocean View Stateroom was well appointed and our balcony offered breathtaking views! We saw a beautiful sunset on the last night.

We strolled through Central Park and heard birds chirping during the day. With gorgeous live plants, it was tranquil and inviting. At night we listened to crickets and heard live musicians singing in the park while we shopped and enjoyed the crisp evening air. We watched a DreamWorks parade, had gourmet cupcakes, and shopped till we dropped on the Royal Promenade. On the Boardwalk we enjoyed hot dogs from the Boardwalk Dog House (featuring Coney Island, German, Sicilian dogs, and more), a cool treat from the Ice Cream Parlor, great shopping in the Star Pier, delicious Mexican fare at Rita’s Cantina, and a sneak peek of Oceanaria at the AquaTheater. In the Amber Theater we were entertained by CHICAGO: The Musical. We laughed at the Comedy Club. And finally, we enjoyed a little down time in the Solarium, a haven for rest and relaxtion.

Allure of the Seas offers hit Broadway shows complimentary with your cruise. They also have unique productions with awesome sets, songs, and dancing to entertain you. In addition they have a Comedy Club, Live Jazz Club, Ice Skating Show and AquaTheater for your nightly entertainment.

We got to see the premier of Chicago, the musical. It was amazing, and the actors were fabulous. Such talent. Blue Planet is also another cool show onboard Allure of the Seas. It is an aerial acrobatic show from Royal Caribbean Productions. Oceanaria, an AquaTheater show, is simply stunning. We got to see a sneak peek of this water show combining gymnastics and diving. There are some US Olympic divers and swimmers that perform in Oceanaria.

The DreamWorks Experience

Find your favorite characters onboard Allure of the Seas. DreamWorks Animation has partnered with Royal Caribbean to bring characters from Shrek, Madagascar, Kung Fu Panda and more, onboard Allure of the Seas. With live shows, 3D movies and parades through the Royal Promenade your kids will love seeing their favorite characters. There is an Ice Show to “How to Train Your Dragon”.

There is no shortage of delicious dining options. With over 20 dining choices you can experience it all. Morgan and Dustin Roberts just returned from their spectacular honeymoon at Sandals Emerald Bay in the Great Exumas, Bahamas. Here is what Morgan had to say:

Sandals Emerald Bay was absolutely amazing! We've never experienced a beach vacation like it before. The water was an unbelievable turquoise blue. Our butler Raj met us in the lobby when we arrived and offered us a glass of champagne and a cool towel. He showed us to our room which had a perfect view of the white sand beach. We enjoyed taking advantage of all the water sports offered by the resort. We went kayaking, rode a water trike, and went snorkeling. The food at the resort was great. We both tried many new things including chilean sea bass, conch fritters, caviar, and lamb chops. The highlight of our trip was the 007 Thunderball Tour offered by Island Routes. We rode a 35ft speed boat through many of the small islands of the Exuma Cays stopping to snorkel in the Thunderball Grotto, feed iguanas, swim with nurse sharks, and visit the swimming pigs. It was incredible! We would definitely recommend the tour to anyone that visits the resort. Overall this was the best vacation either of us have ever taken. It was exactly what we needed after the stress of planning a wedding.

Christina and Paul celebrated their 4th Anniversary at Secrets Silversands Riviera Cancun in Mexico. This adults-only, lavish all-inclusive was perfect for them. Here is what they had to say about their experience...

We absolutely loved Secrets Silversands - Riviera Cancun! From the minute we were picked up from the airport, we were taken care of completely by the excellent staff. We found a "Happy Anniversary" sign on our door to greet us, and received fresh flowers and champagne to celebrate the occasion as well. Most of our time was spent lounging on the beach, where drinks were brought to us continuously by the wonderful staff, but we would also visit one of the eight beautiful pools often as well. My husband enjoyed sailing on the Hobie Cat sailboats, but I preferred relaxing on the beach. The restaurants were incredible, and we enjoyed some of the best food we've ever eaten. After dinner, there was always nightly entertainment, and it was different each night. The staff was great about recommending things to do outside of the resort as well. We ended up doing the Canopy Tour with Selvatica, which includes ziplining through the jungle and then into a beautiful cenote. This was one of my favorite things from our vacation. We met a lot of people and just had an absolute blast. We would definitely recommend this resort to anybody!

Michelle and Dusty vacationed in Jamaica and stayed on the beautiful, untouched Southern Coast at Sandals Whitehouse European Village & Spa. The resort is set on a 500 acre nature reserve secluded in a small fishing village. It is a perfect resort to escape from it all. Michelle sent an email about their experience, so I'll let her tell you about their vacation.

First - thank you for all of your help with rescheduling our vacation. It was such a difficult time for us and all we had to do was send one quick email and you took care of moving the vacation for us. Thanks!! Second - thank you so much for recommending Sandals Whitehouse Jamaica! It was fabulous and definitely lived up to our expectations! Our flight times were perfect and we didn't have to worry about any arrangements!

Sandals Whitehouse was absolutely beautiful. The staff was so incredibly friendly and helpful. The beach and pools were great, we never had any issue finding a spot to lay back and relax! We also took advantage of some of the water activities offered at the resort. We loved the glass bottom boat tour and the Hobie Cat was quite an interesting experience. The restaurant choices offered a great variety and the food was all delicious! Our room was beautiful and the balcony view was gorgeous! We are so glad you recommended Sandals Whitehouse! Thank you!

While we were there, we also went to YS Falls. Loved it!! Dusty and I zip-lined and the guides were great, they made us feel completely safe while we were zip-lining. We also were able to swim in the falls and those guides were amazing as well. They helped us walk through the falls and also took great pictures of us swimming in the falls.

Our vacation was wonderful, Dusty and I were able to sit back and relax and not worry about anything! Thank you again, for all of your help and for the great vacation!

Lindsey and Ricky took their Summer vacation to Cozumel Palace in Cozumel, Mexico. Gladiator for a day

One of our preferred travel vendors published a great article we felt was blogworthy. As the saying goes...When in Rome, do as the Romans do - or at least as ancient Romans did. That's the concept behind the GSR Gladiator School in Rome, where for a small fee, adventure travelers can get the full experience of what it was like to be a gladiator in the Colosseum. Learning the techniques of Roman swordfighters is sure to be an European vacation that travelers won't soon forget.

The informal two-hour course allows visitors to don gladiator garb and see some of the weapons that Romans would have used in battle, according to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. There's even a tournament using foam bats, and all those who complete the course get a certificate in Latin celebrating their accomplishment.

Then visitors can head to the actual Colosseum to get a sense of what it would have been like to be in front of a massive crowd of spectators and facing down deadly foes. Learning about the history of gladiatorial combat is sure to satisfy even the most hardened adrenaline junkies.

And it's the perfect time to learn about gladiators, as the Colosseum is featuring an exhibit dedicated to the warriors that runs through October.

We loved the mature plant life on the resort as well - something we noticed was not present at a lot of the other resorts in the area - at least not to the same degree. Discovering Fiji

Last month GOGO Vacations conducted a Learning Conference in Fiji and I had the opportunity to go. From learning about the Fijian culture, to staying in lavish hotels it was an amazing experience.

[Getting there]
I boarded three planes - Northwest Arkansas to Dallas, Dallas to Los Angeles and finally Los Angeles to Nadi, Fiji. After 14 hours of air time, skipping over a day, and being 17 hours ahead of my body clock, I arrived in Nadi, Fiji and began the trip of a lifetime. [For those who may already be turned off by the long flight, you have to know that it’s totally worth it.]

[Geography 101]
Did you know that Fiji is made up of over 300 islands, and only some of them are inhabited? Fiji is located in the South Pacific; it is East of Australia [just a 3.5 hour flight] and North of New Zealand.

[The People]
Did you know that Fijians are known as the friendliest people in the world? I found them to be warm and welcoming individuals. Fiji has about 838,000 people - indigenous Fijians, descendants of settlers from India, Europeans, people of mixed race, Chinese and Pacific Islands. Fijian and Hindi are the first languages that majority of the population speaks. A vast majority of the people also speak English, and you can count on those working at the resorts and in the tourism industry to do so.

[Bula Spirit]
Before I go any further you must comprehend Bula! When in Fiji, you will hear Bula left and right. Loud BULAS, soft bulas, sweet bulas. It is the universal greeting in Fiji. It means welcome, hello, hi there, g’day, cheers, how are you? and, good health. Probably before you even leave the airport you’ll be saying Bula! yourself.

[Where I spent my time]
I spent my time on Viti Levu, or the mainland as we like to refer to it. We flew into Nadi [pronounced Nan-dee] and headed South to Outrigger on the Lagoon outside of Sigatoka on the Coral Coast. The hotel was very authentic with thatched roofs and bures [aka bungalows] and beautiful scenic views. The highlight of the resort was definitely the spa. Bebe Spa [pronounced behm-beh, which means butterfly] is set way up high overlooking the resort with the most breathtaking views of the land. I indulged myself with a Fijian Bobo Massage that was to die for. It was simply an ahh-mazing experience from start to finish and left me feeling rejuvenated after the long flight. I also took part in a Reef Walk one afternoon during low tide and saw some really cool creatures - blue starfish, sea urchins, bright colorful fish, coral and oysters. We harvested two gigantic oysters while we were out there. What a cool experience.

After two days at Outrigger, we headed to Denarau Island, a manmade island connected to the mainland by a causeway. We stayed at the Westin, but my favorite resort in the area is the Radisson. In Denarau they have what’s called the Bula Bus – you can buy a day pass for a nominal fee and it comes every 10 minutes to pick up/drop off at the hotels and Port Denarau – where all the shops are and the marina is located. Port Denarau is the starting point for those who want to head off to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands – and these Northern islands are where it’s at. I would advise North American travelers to spend majority of their time there. One day we were fortunate to charter a boat out to a small island called Tivua. We got to snorkel and have a traditional meal once we arrived.

After Denarau, we headed to the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa (about 40 minutes from Nadi International Airport). This was by far my favorite resort and beach on Viti Levu. It is the only resort on Natadola Bay and the only stretch of natural, white sand beach on the main island of Fiji, Viti Levu. Forbes Magazine voted Natadola Bay as one of the 25 best beaches in the world in 2008. This resort is simply breathtaking. I had a stunning view of the crystal blue water from my room. My balcony was complete with a modern soaking tub and a beach bed. The room was stylish with all the modern technologies that wow travelers today. Just take a look at my pictures. Need I say more? I would return to this luxurious resort in a heartbeat.

[The Rich Culture]
During our day of seminars, the Fiji Tourism Board set up something really special for us. They had stations for us to rotate through so we could learn about the Fijian Culture. There were two that stuck out to me most of all. First we learned how to make Kokoda [pronounced ko-kahn-da] a traditional Fijian dish served with most meals. It is a cold soup made with white fish, onions, hot peppers, tomatoes and coconut cream. You cook the fish in a lime juice bath and then mix in the other ingredients. Second, we made kava, the National Drink. It is made from powdered pepper root. First you crush the root to a fine powder and then mix it with water. The drink is beige colored and you drink it from a coconut shell. This is one of their favorite ways to socialize. You must clap once or twice, drink the kava and then clap again while saying bula. During ceremonies or special occasions, kava is prepared and offered with elaborate ritual.

[The takeaway]
Fiji is beautiful and the natives are friendly. If you want the true experience of the South Pacific plan to visit the Northern Islands like the Mamanucas or the Yasawas. Or, for the outer island experience on the mainland, check out the InterContinental and you won’t be disappointed. My time in Fiji was rich and I have many warm memories to keep with me for a lifetime.

Let's face it, preparing for vacation can be stressful and chaotic. Have you caught yourself in a rush going over your list on the way to the airport? Did I get the passports out of the safe? I hope our flight is on time, I forgot to check the status. It can be overwhelming as you prepare to get away for some much needed rest & relaxation.

Following some tips from seasoned travelers will help you stay organized and start your trip off on the right foot:

Make a packing list
Make photo copies of your passport. Leave one copy behind in a safe place. Pack another in your checked luggage. This serves as a safety net in the event you lose your passport or it is stolen.
Pack some snacks. That granola bar will save your life when you are in line to get through immigration and it's already been 1 hour.
Check the status of your flight 24 hours prior to departure.

Millionaire Suite

The promised post on my glimpse at one of the Millionaire Suites is finally here! On my recent trip to St. Lucia I had the opportunity to see one of the four suites set up high on the bluff at Sandals Regency La Toc. I was blown away at the design and ambiance. I saw the suite in the evening and it sparkled. The first picture below is a view from the patio with private pool and whirlpool looking in at the bedroom which has retractable doors that open up. By the way, this is completely private and serene. In fact, if I stayed in this suite I don't think I'd ever leave. I might get out for a nice dinner, but that's it. You have a personal Butler to take care of your every need, deliver food, draw your bath water, etc. The view is absolutely breathtaking, and what better way to view it than from the lap of luxury.

You might not be able to tell, but the wall in the bedroom is made out of stones. The creamy colors and textures are yummy. Can't you just picture yourself falling into this bed?

I love this old fashioned tub, it is the center focal point when you walk into the bathroom. To me it's old luxury and charming.

This chic living room is all that. I love the white accent pieces with the dark mahogany.

St. Lucia Revealed

This trip made my third visit to the Simply Beautiful island of St. Lucia and the first with my husband. Our main purpose: much needed R & R [rest and relaxation]. With Bill working full time and also in school getting his MBA, he was well overdue. [And hello, vacation is my profession so I must practice it often, right?] From the moment we landed at Hewanorra airport and stepped off the plane into the sunny 86 degree weather, I was sure I’d found paradise.

For starters, St. Lucia is 27 miles long by 14 miles wide. We stayed at Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa and Beach Resort in Gros Islet which is located on the Northwest tip of the island [1 hour 30 minute drive from the airport- a nice tour of the island on the way to the resort. Or you can take a helicopter to save time.] From Northwest Arkansas, Delta offers single connection flight service. It’s about a 2 hour flight to Atlanta and then a 4 hour flight from there to St. Lucia. [They offer an in-flight movie, GOGO inflight internet and some free snacks. I recommend the biscoff cinnamon biscuits but if pretzels or peanuts are your desire, they have those too.] Sandals Grande St. Lucian is located on a beautiful peninsula. To the North [oceanfront rooms] you have Martinique and when the night lights are shining you can see it off in the horizon. To the South [beachfront rooms] you have the beach and Rodney Bay with wonderfully calm waters in the Caribbean Sea.

I’d like to share the top 10 highlights of our St. Lucia vacation [in no particular order]. Sit back, grab a fruity island drink and take note. By the end of this read you’ll be boarding the plane yourself for paradise [but before you do, call Destinations]. Side note: there were well over 10 highlights, so I have a lot of other nuggets and gems tucked away. If you have questions or comments feel free to email me [sarah@mydestinatons.travel].

1. The scenic views. Coupled with the beautiful Caribbean Sea and the Piton Mountains, St. Lucia is set in a picturesque background. On our last day we toured Piegon Island National Park [just a short walk from Sandals Grande St. Lucian and a small $5 entry fee per person]. This counted as our workout for the day too. We climbed to the top of Fort Rodney and took in the beautiful scenery and enjoyed the wonderful breeze. For all you history lovers, Fort Rodney was a signaling station for the U.S. during World War II. Before that, it was used to protect British interests in St. Lucia from the French over in Martinique.

2. Rainforest Canopy Tour aka the Zipline. Saturday we set off on a 4 hour excursion into the rainforest to swing through the trees [and yes, I felt like Jane and I’m pretty sure Bill = Tarzan]. We did 11 lines total. The longest being 1500 feet [great for taking in the scenery] and the highest measuring 250 feet. Note: if you think this might not be for you, because you are afraid of heights, think again and dominate your fear. The worst part is the anticipation. By the second platform you’ll be taking a running jump start.

3. George of the Jungle, as our tour guide called himself. George picked us up at the resort and filled us full of St. Lucia tidbits during our 1 hour 20 minute drive to the zipline and back. He was phenomenal. He not only taught us about his island [and boy could you sense his pride], but he also gave us hands on encounters with a cacao pod, cinnamon leaves, fresh coconut and candied coconut making for a tremendous experience.

4. Dining at La Toc. Sandals offers a great value-add in St. Lucia. You can stay at 1 resort and play at 3 [all are within 30 minutes of each other and complimentary transportation is provided]. We took full advantage of this and had dinner at the French restaurant at Sandals Regency La Toc one evening. I highly recommend La Toc and its entire chic ambiance complete with petite lamps with blue and white striped shades on each white linen clothed table. The service was impeccable [Bon Travail, Oriel!] and the food was divine. The chef perfectly prepared my bacon scallop appetizer followed by a succulent rack of lamb. We topped off the night with crème brulee so smooth and silky. I can’t wait to dine at La Toc again, until then I’ll dream about the menu.

5. Our Honeymoon Grande Luxe Beachfront Room. Our room was conveniently located to the main pool area, restaurants and beach and offered a breathtaking view. I loved the King size Farmhouse bed complete with cozy white linens you could dive into every night. We had a nice sitting area with a loveseat, ottoman and coffee table. We had a 40” plasma screen tv that could be adjusted toward the sitting area or for viewing from the bed. [We happen to be Winter Olympic lovers, so we enjoyed catching bits and pieces of it from our luxurious room.] The bathroom had a standard bathtub and shower and a his and her double vanity.

6. Gordon’s on the Pier. Our last evening we dined at Gordon’s which is set out over the water and you dine in the open air with the cool ocean breeze hitting your back. It is a lovely setting. [Gordon’s is included for guests staying in Butler Suites, or $130 per couple if not.] This seven course fine dining experience was coupled with wonderful service. Our server, Aston, made it an enjoyable laid back evening. We started with the amuse bouche, which was duck. For theappetizer, I had ahi tuna, a shrimp ceviche and a phyllo pastry with goat cheese and spinach. Next, I had a grilled apple and walnut salad. I skipped the soup, but Bill had the conch chowder and raved about it. Then to cleanse the palette, we had sorbet [who doesn’t love dessert before dinner?] For the main course [as if I had any room at all for it] I had red snapper with vegetables and rice [oh and I had them add a couple scallops which were to die for]. Lastly, we finished off the evening with an excellent chocolate mousse and cheesecake. Then we basically rolled ourselves into bed because we were filled to the brim with rich food.

7. Champagne Breakfasts. Each morning, with the exception of the last, we had breakfast at Toscanini’s where they serve a la carte breakfast served from 7-10am. We would start off with a mimosa and then order from the menu. Among some of our favorites were the egg white frittata, breakfast sandwich and steak and eggs. They had wonderful pineapple too. It’s nice to be served for all your meals and that’s one of my favorite things about Sandals. I don’t think I did a buffet once on my entire vacation. [Although, if that’s your style Bayside is open for buffet breakfast and lunch.]

8. The Millionaire Suite. As fate would have it, I ran into two Sandals Executives from the U.S. who were at the resort on business and we chatted a bit before our dinner reservation at La Toc. I simply stated that I’d love to see the Millionaire Suites and poof; we were whisked away in the Butler Mobile up the bluff to tour one. [Okay, this was paradise.] Oh my goodness, this might possibly be the very best room category in the Sandals lineup. There are 4 Millionaire Suites and they are located on the highest bluff at Sandals Regency La Toc Resort offering total privacy. Simply brilliant is what these Butler Suites are. [I kept thinking, if only I had packed my bags for the night surely they would have let me stay in it.] I’ve got two words to describe this suite. Macked out. In fact, it’s worthy of its own blog post, so be on the lookout for that soon. Oh, and be prepared to drool when you see the pictures.

9. The Sunsets. The sunsets from Rodney Bay are breathtaking. I love to stay out until the sun disappears off in the horizon [it marks the end of a great day when you can say you saw a gorgeous sunset.]

10. Five Star Service. Throughout the resort, I found the service to be exceptional. So much so, that I took it upon myself to let the General Manager know my last day there. I was thoroughly impressed from the front desk staff to the room attendants. It seemed that everyone was interested in how we were enjoying our stay. And, one lady in particular called me by name each time I saw or spoke with her. What a nice touch to really have great customer service. It really adds to your vacation experience taking it from good to great. On the day we left, I noticed both Hotel Managers were thanking everyone for choosing their resort and bidding farewell by shaking hands and helping with luggage. What a nice note to leave on. It definitely made a lasting impression on me. I’ve traveled to a lot of places and was caught by surprise when I saw these two gentlemen and their genuine gratitude. It brought a smile to my face.

It can’t go without mention that this resort also has great junk food in addition to fine dining. Creamy milkshakes in three different flavors, brick oven pizzas and calzones, nachos, cheeseburgers, crepes and pub food. The list could go on and on [and yes, in answer to your question, of course I tried it all.] As they say in St. Lucia, No Pressure. No Problem. So I just went with it. [I can work it off later, right?]

Top 10 Beaches

On my flight to St. Lucia yesterday, I picked up the Delta Sky Magazine and started thumbing through it. I found an article you’re bound to ooh and ahh over. Calling all beach lovers! It’s time to pack your bathing suit, sarong and those Hollywood sunglasses and jet off to one of these spectacular beach destinations.

1. Playa Punta Paloma { Tarifa, Spain } The southernmost point of mainland Spain - about 8 miles across the Strait of Gibraltar from Africa - possesses the best windsurfing and kitesurfing conditions in all of Europe. To visit this destination fly into Malaga, Spain. I can tell you firsthand that this is an amazing site to see windsurfers and kitesurfers alike in action. I studied abroad in Malaga and we did a daytrip to Tarifa. Absolutely gorgeous!

2. Ipanema { Rio de Janeiro, Brazil } Rated by Travel Channel as the Sexiest Beach in the World, the sandy shores that line Rio's coast are the place to see and be seen. Head over to Posto Nove for a full dose of celebrity sightings. To visit, fly into Rio.

3. Grace Bay Beach { Providenciales, Turks and Caicos } - Often named the most beautiful beach in the world, Grace Bay is home to crystal clear waters, 12 miles of white sand beaches and Jo Jo, the bottlenosed dolphin. To visit, fly into Providenciales. I can also tell you about this destination firsthand. The beach is absolutely breathtaking. The water is a beautiful shade of turquoise and when the powdery white sand gets between your toes you’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven.

4. Pink Sands Beach { Harbour Island, The Bahamas } - Three miles of hardpacked light coral sand line the pristine waterfront of Harbour Island. The sand is made upf of tiny bits of coral, crushed shells and red-shelled single-celled organisms called foraminiferas. To visit, fly into Nassau.

9. Plage de la Briande { Saint-Tropez, France } One of the most secluded beaches along the Cote d’Azur is perfect for those looking to sunbathe in solitude. Parents, be forewarned: many beaches in Europe are topless. To visit, fly into Nice or Marseille.

10. Crane Beach { Barbados } Located on the island’s south coast, the beach possesses all the draws of the Caribbean, but with bigger waves, leaving the waters littered with surfers waiting on the next swell. To visit, fly into Barbados.

Magical Disney Vacation

The Swope's recently returned from an unforgettable trip to Walt Disney World. We anticipated a rocky start to their trip because of snow and ice in Northwest Arkansas, but luckily their flight took off on time and they were able to leave the cold white stuff behind and head for sunny Orlando. [It was Ryan's first flight!] They stayed at Disneys Animal Kingdom Lodge complete with bunk beds for the kids. They also added on the Disney Dining Plan and set up their dinner reservations in advance, which made for a hassle free vacation. Their kids were at such a great age to experience the magical world of Walt Disney. They had a wonderful time and some of the highlights included Breakfast with the Princesses, Addie's visit to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, thrilling rides, great meals they shared together and of course the autographs from all the famous Disney characters. What a keepsake that will be.

Ryan enjoyed the Princess Breakfast most of all! He got 3 kisses. Look at that smile.

Traveling Girls

Within 48 hours I'll be on the ground in St. Lucia. Ahh! Goodbye cold Arkansas, hello Sun and Sand! I've been anticipating this trip for sometime. My husband and I are going on this vacation strictly for rest and relaxation. We will be staying at Sandals Grande St. Lucian Spa and Beach Resort. This resort is set on a peninsula so we'll have Rodney Bay on one side and off in the distance you can see Martinique from the other side. I can't wait to report back on all the fun things we do and sights we'll see. I do anticipate one day of adventure...we're going to zipline!

Tracee has two fabulous trips coming up. In March she's headed on a cruise on Voyager of the Seas sailing from Galveston. She'll enjoy 7 splendid days on this fantastic cruise ship by Royal Caribbean. One of the ports she's most excited about is Roatan, Honduras. In April she's whisking her husband away to Sandals Emerald Bay in Great Exumas, Bahamas. Have you heard of this All Butler Suite Sandals Resort? It's brand new [just opened last month]. This place is ahh-mazing. I can't wait for you all to hear about Tracee's experience firsthand.

On my recent flight to Dallas I read the latest Redbook magazine and found some stress relievers worth adopting. More than ever, we are all finding stress in our lives to be at an all time high.

5 ways to find your calm in 20 minutes (or less).

1. Tidy up a little. Doing 20 minutes a week of housework could decrease your stress levels. Not to mention how great you will feel when you accomplish something on your to do list.

2. Stare out the window. You know how good a walk outside makes you feel. But even just peering through a window can calm you down. Make a point of sitting by your biggest window with a view when you can.

3. Sniff some coffee. Next time you are feeling overwhelmed, slip into a Starbucks and take a whiff. Ahh! Research shows that scents can lower anxiety in humans.

4. Score a yoga buzz just by breathing. It's no secret that meditation, prayer and yoga can chill you out. All of those practices bring about what's called the relaxation response: a calming of mind and body that can actually decrease the experession of certain genes in the body, thus lowering baseline stress. Sit quietly and close you eyes. Allow your muscles to relax. Shrug your shoulders; roll your head and neck and sit at ease breathing in and out slowly. Just 15 minutes of this a day can keep the anxiety away!

5. Go on vacation. Okay, so she didn't write this one, but I had to add it. I know you can't do it in 20 minutes each day, but there's proof that people perform better in their daily lives and at work when they take regularly scheduled vacations to decompress, relax and rejuvenate. Did you know it was necessary to vacation? No longer is it a luxury. Now you have strict orders to start planning your vacation.

LTA Conference in Dallas

Tracee and I spent the weekend at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in the Dallas Forth Worth Airport. Believe it or not, we never left the airport from the time we flew in Friday evening until we departed Sunday morning. We attended the Leisure Travel Alliance Conference. It was a great weekend full of new things happening in the travel industry. The hotel was fabulous. I'd highly recommend it. Their Grand Met restaurant offers high end cuisine with impeccable flavor.

On Friday, we flew out of Fort Smith, AR for the first time. It's an impressive little airport. We were quite pleased with their restrooms. I snapped a picture for you all to see. Come to find out, in 2005 they were named the nation's best public bathrooms by Cintas, which sells bathroom supplies.

Where We Are Headed Next

This weekend Tracee and I are headed to Dallas for the Leisure Travel Alliance Conference. We hope to learn lots of great new things going on in the vacation industry! Maybe we can even squeeze in some time for a little power shopping [a girl's best friend].

On February 17th I'm taking off for the beach. My husband and I are going to St. Lucia in the Caribbean for some rest and relaxation. We will stay at one of the Sandals All-Inclusive Resorts on the island. They are spectacular. Did you know that St. Lucia is known as the Hawaii of the Caribbean? They have lush green moutainous terrain as well as banana plantations and a volcano. The Piton mountains make for a gorgeous backdrop in St. Lucia.

In March, Tracee is taking a Royal Caribbean cruise out of Galveston on the Voyager of the Seas! She'll be cruising in style with some other agents taking part in a Seminar at Sea. I'm sure she'll also find plenty of time for fun too. This ship is full of activities from ice skating to rock climbing, nightly shows and a Royal Promenade for shopping and enjoying an ice cream treat.
